On Saturday, before the New York Islanders faced off against the New York Rangers at UBS Arena, a truly special moment unfolded as 104-year-old World War II veteran Staff Sergeant Dominick Critelli took center stage. With his soprano saxophone in hand, Critelli delivered a moving rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” that left the crowd in awe.

A veteran of the 95th Infantry Division, Critelli had seen action in Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge, earning three Bronze Stars during his 151 days in combat. Dressed in a custom Islanders jersey with the number “104” on the back, he flawlessly played a traditional arrangement of the national anthem. The crowd, including rival Rangers fans, joined in singing along and erupted into chants of “USA!” afterwards.

The heartwarming moment quickly went viral, with FBI Director Kash Patel expressing his admiration on social media platform X, stating, “Gotta love it.” Critelli’s performance became one of the most inspiring anthem renditions in sports history, showcasing the resilience and patriotism of a true American hero.

In the game that followed, the New York Islanders went on to secure a 2-0 shutout victory over the New York Rangers. Anders Lee wasted no time in opening the scoring just 58 seconds into the first period, giving the Islanders an early lead. The game remained tight, with Simon Holmstrom sealing the win with an empty-net goal in the final minutes of the third period.

Islanders coach Patrick Roy commended his team’s energy and defensive effort, highlighting the hard-fought nature of the game. Despite the strong performance against the Rangers, the Islanders fell short in a 4-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets the following day at Nationwide Arena.

Overall, the Islanders’ victory over their rivals and Critelli’s unforgettable anthem performance added a poignant touch to the weekend’s hockey action. The combination of sportsmanship, patriotism, and historical significance made for a memorable event for fans and players alike.

As the Islanders continue their season, they will carry the spirit of Critelli’s performance with them, honoring the sacrifices of veterans like him both on and off the ice. The impact of his tribute serves as a reminder of the enduring power of music, sports, and the American spirit.
