Residents Leaving New York and New Jersey for Greener Pastures

It seems like a real-life “Escape From New York” as more residents are choosing to leave New York and New Jersey for other states, according to the United Van Lines’ 2025 National Movers Study. This year, these two states saw the highest percentage of residents moving out compared to any other state. New Jersey topped the list with 62% of its residents leaving, closely followed by New York with 58%.

The decision to relocate is influenced by various factors, with the desire to be closer to family and job opportunities being the top reasons cited in the study. This shift in migration patterns reflects a preference for lower-density living that became more prominent during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Michael A. Stoll, an Economist and Professor at The University of California, Los Angeles, Americans are now making complex decisions when it comes to interstate relocation, considering multiple factors.

Top Outbound States in 2025:

  1. New Jersey
  2. New York
  3. California
  4. North Dakota
  5. Colorado
  6. Mississippi
  7. Massachusetts

These states are seeing a significant number of residents leaving, with older individuals often moving out for retirement, affordability, and lifestyle changes.

Top Inbound States in 2025:

  1. Oregon
  2. West Virginia
  3. South Carolina
  4. Delaware
  5. Minnesota
  6. Idaho
  7. North Carolina
  8. Arkansas
  9. Alabama
  10. Nevada

On the flip side, states like Oregon, West Virginia, and South Carolina are attracting more residents due to opportunities in sectors like tech and healthcare, as well as a more affordable cost of living compared to major metros.

This shift towards smaller cities and towns outside major metropolitan areas is indicative of Americans seeking a different pace of life. Destinations like Oregon and the Carolinas are meeting these expectations, providing a new home for those looking for a change.
