Donald Trump sparked outrage when he took to Truth Social to criticize the Kennedy family just hours after the tragic death of JFK’s granddaughter, Tatiana Schlossberg, at the age of 35. Schlossberg, a former climate and energy reporter at the New York Times, had been battling acute myeloid leukemia since giving birth to her daughter in 2024.
One of Trump’s reposted messages read: “The Trumps have always been supporters of the arts. The Kennedys are supporters of the Kennedys.” Another message stated: “They don’t raise money for it. They never show up. And the only Kennedy who has been there recently is a member of Trump’s cabinet.”
While Trump’s posts were not directly related to Schlossberg’s passing, they were in reference to the controversy surrounding his renaming of the Kennedy Center to “The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.” This move has caused backlash from the Kennedy family and led to several scheduled performances being canceled.
Many on social media criticized Trump for his timing, deeming it tasteless and cruel as the Kennedy family grieves the loss of one of their own. CNN’s Jake Tapper called out Trump’s behavior, highlighting the insensitivity of attacking the Kennedys shortly after Schlossberg’s death.
This is not the first time Trump has come under fire for attacking a grieving family. Earlier in December, he faced backlash for targeting director Rob Reiner after his passing, claiming that Reiner’s death was a result of the anger he caused by opposing Trump. Reiner’s son, Nick, was later arrested in connection to his parents’ deaths. Trump’s behavior has been widely condemned, with figures like Joe Rogan expressing disappointment and disbelief at his actions.
The incident involving the Kennedy family adds to the growing list of controversies surrounding Trump’s behavior on social media. Despite the backlash, Trump continues to use platforms like Truth Social to share divisive and inflammatory messages, further polarizing public opinion. The timing and insensitivity of his posts only serve to deepen the divide and highlight the need for more respectful discourse in public discourse.
