From late 2020 to mid-2021, Johnny Allen found himself in a series of legal troubles in a West Side neighborhood of Chicago. Despite being arrested four times for drug-related offenses, prosecutors dropped the charges each time. However, the story took a dark turn when Allen shot and attempted to kill a man just a month after the last set of charges were dismissed. The incident was allegedly linked to an ongoing gang conflict in the area.

This week, Johnny Allen, now 26 years old, received a 29-year prison sentence for the shooting after being convicted by a jury back in June. The question arises whether the outcome for both Allen and the victim would have been different if the legal system had not given Allen multiple chances.

The string of arrests began on November 28, 2020, when Allen was apprehended for allegedly selling oxycodone on South Pulaski Road. The charges were dropped the following day during his bond hearing. About six weeks later, Allen was accused of robbing a man at gunpoint on West Wilcox Street, carrying a variety of illegal substances. Despite the victim choosing not to press charges, Allen was still charged with multiple narcotics offenses, all of which were later dismissed.

Subsequent arrests for drug-related activities followed in June 2021, with Allen being caught in possession of oxycodone pills and then selling heroin to undercover officers. Once again, the charges were dropped shortly after. However, the most serious incident occurred on October 1, 2021, when a 32-year-old man encountered Allen and another individual while on his way to get a haircut. The victim tried to distance himself from the gang conflict, but Allen allegedly responded by shooting him multiple times in the torso, leg, and buttocks.

Despite the shooters fleeing the scene, the victim was able to identify them to the authorities, leading to Allen’s arrest on attempted murder charges. He was subsequently taken to Stateville Correctional Center to begin serving his 29-year sentence, with a requirement to serve 85% of the term before being eligible for parole.

The case of Johnny Allen serves as a cautionary tale of missed opportunities and the potential consequences of repeated criminal behavior. It highlights the importance of accountability and the need for effective intervention to prevent further harm to individuals and communities.
