Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is facing mounting national criticism over a massive Somali fraud scandal in his state, leading to expectations that he will drop out of the 2026 re-election race.

According to Minnesota political analyst Blois Olson, Walz is likely to withdraw from the race as indicated by a post on X.

Walz’s office has scheduled a press conference for Monday morning, but no details have been provided on the subject of the conference.

The embattled governor has been under scrutiny for his handling of alleged Medicaid and day care fraud in Minnesota, with potential losses in the billions. The spotlight intensified after viral footage showed taxpayer-funded day care centers that appeared to be largely empty.

Federal authorities have launched an operation to address the fraud in Minnesota, with the Department of Homeland Security leading efforts to identify and remove criminals involved in defrauding the American people.

Republicans have criticized Minnesota Democrats for failing to prevent taxpayer losses and have likened the alleged scheme to organized crime. The Trump administration has announced plans to freeze federal child care funds until states provide additional verification for their programs.

President Trump himself suggested that the fraud in Minnesota could be even larger than initially believed, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.

State Representative Kristin Robbins, a GOP gubernatorial candidate, expressed her concerns about the fraud scandal and criticized the Walz administration for ignoring warnings raised during a hearing in February 2024.

The House Oversight Committee is expected to conduct multiple hearings on the alleged scandal in the coming weeks.

Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar is speculated to be a likely contender to replace Governor Walz in the race following their meeting on Sunday.
