The prestigious award is given out annually in each state and is decided by fellow sports journalists. Newman started at JS in 2016 as the prep sports editor but has since expanded his coverage to a wide range of topics, including the Rockies, the Avs, Colorado’s new professional women’s soccer team, Olympic athletes, and stories about the local community.

“Kyle is incredibly versatile, hardworking, and dedicated,” said Patrick Saunders, The Post’s Rockies beat writer. “He can tackle anything from a high school football game to a detailed investigative piece.

“Kyle has become an integral part of the Denver Post sports department, and this recognition is well-deserved.”

Some of Newman’s standout stories from 2025 include an in-depth look at the impact of the Broncos stadium relocation on the Sun Valley neighborhood, a touching piece on a Vietnam War veteran and pitcher who found redemption after battling drug addiction, a profile on a skier who set a record for consecutive days on the slopes, a story about a boulderer’s comeback after a near-fatal accident, and a report on a top prep program facing challenges following the resignation of its football coach.

This marks the 51st time a Denver Post journalist has been honored with the NSMA’s sportswriter of the year award since its inception in 1959, and the 16th time in the last 18 years.

Additionally, Dave Logan, the voice of the Broncos and KOA radio, was named the Colorado sportscaster of the year for the fifth time. Sean McDonough of ESPN/ABC received the national sportscaster of the year accolade, while Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports was named national sportswriter of the year.
