Interim Venezuelan leader Delcy Rodríguez extended an invitation to U.S. President Donald Trump to collaborate and expressed her desire for respectful relations in a conciliatory message released on Sunday night.

Rodríguez’s statement on her Instagram account in English marked a significant shift in tone after delivering speeches projecting defiance towards the Trump administration over the weekend.

“We invite the US government to collaborate with us on an agenda of cooperation oriented towards shared development within the framework of international law to strengthen lasting community coexistence,” she wrote.

Her message comes in response to Trump’s recent threat that she could face consequences if she did not comply with U.S. demands.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested that the United States would not have a day-to-day role in governing Venezuela, except for enforcing an existing “oil quarantine” on the country, a shift from Trump’s earlier announcement that the U.S. would take charge of Venezuela post the ousting of Nicolás Maduro.
