The beginning of a new year often brings with it a desire to get in shape and improve our fitness levels. According to a survey conducted by ForbesHealth/OnePoll, 48% of people set fitness goals for the year ahead. This leads to a surge in gym memberships in January as individuals embark on their journey to a healthier lifestyle. However, as the year progresses, many find themselves losing motivation and interest in their gym memberships, leading to unused memberships that continue to drain their bank accounts.

One of the main issues that individuals face when trying to cancel their gym memberships is the inconvenient cancellation policies imposed by most gyms. In 2024, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) introduced a ‘click-to-cancel’ rule to make it easier for consumers to cancel various memberships, including gym memberships, online. However, this rule was struck down by a federal court in July 2025, leaving gyms free to enforce their own challenging cancellation policies.

It is crucial for individuals to carefully read the fine print of their gym membership contracts to avoid being stuck with a costly service they no longer use. A recent survey by Finder revealed that Americans collectively spend $397 million on unused gym memberships each year. Despite the high number of new gym sign-ups in January, nearly 50% of new members attempt to cancel their memberships within six months of joining.

The process of cancelling a gym membership can often be more challenging than anticipated, with gyms requiring in-person cancellations, specific cancellation windows, or hefty fees to terminate contracts. Some gyms even resort to taking members to small claims court if they stop paying without officially cancelling their memberships.

Consumer groups have been advocating for a new ‘click-to-cancel’ rule to simplify the cancellation process for gym memberships. While there has been no progress on this front so far, the FTC recently filed a lawsuit against LA Fitness for making it excessively difficult for consumers to cancel their memberships. This lawsuit could potentially set a precedent for how gyms handle cancellations in the future.

Before committing to a gym membership, individuals are advised to research and choose a gym that aligns with their needs and financial constraints. Reading and understanding the gym’s cancellation policy is essential to avoid any future complications. Negotiating the contract terms, especially regarding cancellation policies, can be beneficial for individuals who anticipate potential obstacles in the future.

Additionally, exploring options such as health insurance coverage for gym memberships or investing in home gym equipment can help reduce ongoing fitness expenses. Despite the initial investment, having workout equipment at home, such as free weights and cardio machines, can eliminate the need for a costly gym membership.

In conclusion, being informed and proactive when it comes to gym memberships can help individuals avoid unnecessary financial burdens and ensure a seamless fitness journey. By understanding the terms of their contracts and exploring alternative options, individuals can make informed decisions that align with their fitness goals and financial well-being.
