A Chicago man found himself in hot water after attempting to walk out of Macy’s flagship store in the Loop with over $1,200 worth of merchandise, including a surprising item—a can of beer. Jeffery Lowery, 33, now faces a felony retail theft charge following the incident.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office’s Community Safety Team responded to a call from store security at around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. Security footage revealed Lowery grabbing jewelry, gift sets, a comforter, and a cold beer from a cooler before trying to exit the store without paying for the items.

When confronted by loss prevention employees, Lowery refused to cooperate. Sheriff’s officers arrived on the scene and had to physically restrain him as he continued to resist their efforts. Lowery was ultimately taken into custody and has since been released pending trial on charges of felony retail theft and misdemeanor resisting arrest.

The sheriff’s office shared details of the incident on their Facebook page, sparking a mix of reactions from followers. Some expressed surprise at Lowery’s choice of target, with one commenter jokingly suggesting he seemed more like a “Kmart blue light special kinda guy.” Others speculated about his intentions, with one person humorously suggesting he was just going to his car to get his wallet.

However, the most common reaction seemed to be disbelief over the fact that Macy’s sells beer. Joanne Jones Demmin’s comment encapsulated this sentiment, echoing the surprise shared by many readers.

This unique story, originally reported by CWBChicago, highlights the unexpected nature of retail theft incidents and the variety of reactions they can elicit. Stay tuned for more updates on this case as it unfolds.
