Jeffon Williams Sentenced to 91 Years in Prison for Shooting Chicago Police Officers
Jeffon Williams, the man who shot two Chicago police officers during a 2020 traffic stop, has been sentenced to 91 years in prison. Williams, who was convicted of nine felony counts including attempted murder, made a chilling statement to investigators after the incident, saying, “F*** that officer, I hope he dies.”
The jury found Williams guilty on August 14 of multiple charges of attempted murder, and Judge Steven Watkins handed down his punishment on Monday. Williams received two consecutive 45-year prison terms for the attempted murders and an additional one-year sentence for unlawful use of a weapon. He will have to serve at least 85% of the attempted murder sentences.
At the time of the shooting in Homan Square on August 30, 2020, Williams was only 19 years old. He was also out on bail for pending burglary and stolen motor vehicle cases.
The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. when officers in a marked squad car spotted Williams making a U-turn in a vehicle without a license plate on West Polk Street. The officers followed him until he turned onto a side street, where they conducted a traffic stop. As officers approached the vehicle, Williams climbed into the trunk from the back seat.
Despite repeated commands to exit the vehicle, Williams reached for a handgun with an extended magazine on the center console. A struggle ensued, and Williams began firing at the officers, striking two of them. He then fled the scene with the gun but was critically injured by police gunfire during a chase.
When questioned about the shooting later on, Williams callously expressed his disregard for the officers involved, showing no remorse for his actions.
Both injured officers, who had only been on the force for around two years, suffered significant injuries. One was shot in the shoulder, while the other sustained gunshot wounds to his torso and arm, causing severe internal damage.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability has not released body-worn camera footage or other investigative materials related to the incident due to a court order.
With a lengthy prison sentence ahead of him, Jeffon Williams will now face the consequences of his violent actions against law enforcement officers.
