The Lyon’s Den hookah lounge in West Town, Chicago, was the scene of chaos on July 19, 2024, when three people were shot during a violent incident that led to the city’s closure of the business. Shawn Booker, 33, has been charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm into an occupied building after being identified in a photo line-up as the man seen on video firing a gun into a crowd at the lounge.

Judge Ankur Srivastava emphasized the severity of the situation in a detention order, stating that Booker had the potential to cause grave harm with his actions. Despite not being charged with shooting anyone directly, Booker’s actions were deemed reckless and dangerous.

Witnesses provided conflicting reports of the incident, with some stating that the gunman fired from a black sedan while others claimed to have seen a second gunman shooting from a nearby corner. Chicago police investigators found numerous shell casings in the area surrounding Lyon’s Den, indicating a chaotic and dangerous scene.

Fortunately, all three victims of the shooting were reported to be in good condition. A 23-year-old man was shot in the shoulder, a 45-year-old man in the left elbow, and a 31-year-old man sustained gunshot wounds to both feet.

This was not the first instance of violence at Lyon’s Den. In January 2023, a shootout near the entrance resulted in the death of one of the club’s security officers, Austin McAllister. The tragic incident prompted calls for the club’s closure, but it remained open after implementing increased security measures.

Months later, authorities identified a parolee named Jimmy Chamberlain as a suspect in the 2023 shooting. Chamberlain, who had a history of violent offenses, was apprehended last summer and is currently awaiting trial on multiple felony charges.

The ongoing violence and criminal activity surrounding Lyon’s Den have raised concerns among residents and officials in the area. The community is seeking solutions to address the root causes of such incidents and ensure the safety of its residents.

As the investigation continues and legal proceedings unfold, the future of Lyon’s Den remains uncertain. The repercussions of the recent shooting and past incidents highlight the need for proactive measures to prevent further violence and ensure the well-being of the community.
