Snakebird is an exciting, interactive math puzzle game that captivates the attention of elementary students, particularly those in grades 3 to 6. Available on PlayMath.org, this game encourages children to apply their understanding of positive and negative numbers, strategy, and spatial reasoning in order to tackle a growing array of challenging puzzles.

Moving away from traditional learning methods that often rely on rote memorization and repetitive exercises, Snakebird allows students to control a vibrant, snake-like bird as it navigates through various obstacles. The game emphasizes a playful and intuitive approach to mathematics, free from advertisements and timers. Students are not provided with explicit instructions; rather, they are invited to experiment, tinker, and learn through trial and error, transforming math into an enjoyable exploration rather than a dull task.

We spoke with April Archer, a 4th-grade teacher from California, about her experiences using Snakebird in her classroom. With five years of teaching under her belt, she continuously seeks innovative ways to enhance the engagement and relevance of math for her students.

What motivated you to review the game Snakebird?

I chose to review Snakebird because it surpasses typical math drills by promoting genuine problem-solving, strategic thinking, and teamwork. It effectively addresses a common issue in upper elementary math—developing spatial awareness and a more profound understanding of positive and negative numbers. I’ve witnessed how my students light up when faced with a challenging puzzle and collaborate to discover solutions. The game ignites engaging classroom discussions, fosters a growth mindset, and makes learning math enjoyable. My students often express their excitement with phrases like “I finally got it!” as they assist each other through tougher levels. For me, Snakebird is more than just another math game; it is a powerful instrument for enhancing confidence, cooperation, and mathematical reasoning in my classroom.

Which grade levels do you believe are best suited for Snakebird and why?

In my opinion, Snakebird is ideally suited for students in grades 3–6. To thrive in the game, they should have a foundational understanding of positive and negative numbers, as these concepts become increasingly important as the game levels progress. Students in this age bracket typically possess the necessary strategic thinking and spatial awareness to effectively complete the challenges.

Can you provide examples of games that align with specific standards for your class?

During my exploration of the various offerings on PlayMath.org, I noticed games that cover multiplication, fractions, number lines, and place value.

  • Multiplication

    • 4.OA.1–3: Interpret multiplication equations as comparisons; solve multi-step word problems involving multiplication/division.
    • 4.NBT.5: Multiply up to 4-digit numbers by 1-digit and 2-digit numbers using various strategies and algorithms.

  • Fractions

    • 4.NF.1–4: Compare fractions with different denominators; add, subtract, and multiply fractions with whole numbers.

  • Number Lines

    • Utilize number lines for fractions and measurement (e.g., line plots).

  • Place Value

    • 4.NBT.1–3: Recognize place value in multi-digit numbers; compare and round numbers.

Key Practices for Grades 3–6

  • Utilize visual models (like arrays and number lines) to enhance conceptual understanding.
  • Focus on reasoning about size and equivalence for fractions.
  • Progressively apply algorithms for multiplication and division from conceptual understanding to procedural fluency.

In what ways did you incorporate Snakebird into your teaching?

I primarily employed PlayMath.org as a differentiated learning resource that complements my core math instruction. I used Snakebird as a Math Puzzle Warm-Up, engaging the class in solving a puzzle together, with students coming up to the screen to explain their thought processes. Hearing my students articulate their problem-solving strategies was incredibly rewarding. I also offered it as an option for early finishers—my students appreciate having fresh and diverse choices. I particularly enjoy this game because it goes beyond mere drills; it promotes engagement and critical thinking.

What was your students’ response to the games on PlayMath.org?

My 4th graders were genuinely engaged and delighted to try something different. One group mentioned that while some puzzles were challenging, they found them enjoyable. I often heard phrases like “I finally got it!” which reflects their growth mindset and determination not to give up on the tougher puzzles. It was heartwarming to see them support each other.

How would you summarize your overall experience with the site?

Outstanding! The website is extremely user-friendly. My students were thoroughly engaged in the game, particularly relishing the challenge of puzzles compared to conventional math drills. I appreciate that the entire site is ad-free, which simplifies my teaching experience and enhances the educational atmosphere.

How straightforward was it to implement Snakebird in your classroom?

It was very simple! I shared the link on Google Classroom, and some students even managed to type PlayMath.org directly into their search bars. Accessing a website like this is far more convenient than using specific applications that require multiple sign-ins.

What other game(s) did you enjoy on PlayMath.org?

Big Numbers: It posed a challenge for the students without being overly difficult, creating an ideal learning environment. I appreciated how it helped them develop number bonds and base-ten concepts.

What distinguishes PlayMath.org from other educational sites you’ve utilized in your classroom?

Unlike other platforms that necessitate a Google login/password/class code, PlayMath.org allows students to access content without those additional steps. This means they can focus on learning without wasting time entering usernames and passwords. While many sites emphasize basic drill exercises, I appreciate the requirement for strategy, logic, and reasoning in these games. Furthermore, the fact that it is entirely free makes it accessible for all teachers.

How will PlayMath.org streamline your teaching or save you time?

My students will save a significant amount of time without the hassle of logging into any of the games on PlayMath.org. The entire site is intuitive and easy to navigate, allowing me to reinforce and review essential topics efficiently.
