Remarkably, he even halted House operations for nearly two months to ensure that no agreements could be reached regarding the subsidies, effectively holding millions’ health insurance hostage.
However, in a surprising twist, the events in the House on Thursday showcased a significant shift in the political landscape. The Democratic proposal for a three-year extension of the ACA subsidies, first introduced earlier in 2025, gained unexpected traction. A faction of vulnerable House Republicans, frustrated by Johnson’s broken promises to allow a vote on the subsidies, broke ranks to support a discharge petition that forced a vote on the Democratic initiative, resulting in a surprising passage of 230-196.
