The recent stabbing incident in Queens that resulted in the death of a 17-year-old boy has shed light on the criminal history of one of the suspects involved. Derek Trejo, an 18-year-old teenager charged in the fatal stabbing, was actually out on “supervised release” in a separate gang assault case at the time of the deadly attack.

Just two months before the fatal ambush in Woodhaven, Trejo had been released by Judge Jennifer Tubridy in a gang assault case where he was part of a group accused of brutally beating and stabbing a 34-year-old stranger. Despite the Queens District Attorney’s Office requesting bail, Tubridy granted Trejo supervised release.

Less than two months after being released, Trejo and a 17-year-old accomplice got into a dispute with the victim, Josue Argudo, resulting in the fatal stabbing in broad daylight. The incident took place at Jamaica Avenue and 76th Street, with the 17-year-old plunging a knife into Argudo’s torso.

Neighbors in Woodhaven expressed shock at the judge’s decision to release Trejo, with some questioning how such a move could have been made given the violent nature of his previous charges. The community members highlighted the lack of consequences for gang members, with one neighbor mentioning that gang members are aware that little will happen to them even if they are arrested multiple times.

Argudo, described as a nice kid who just wanted to go to school, was unfortunately caught in the altercation between Trejo and his accomplice. Despite attempts by neighbors to save him, Argudo succumbed to his injuries at Jamaica Hospital.

Both Trejo and the 17-year-old accomplice were held without bail in the murder case, with Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz condemning the senseless act of violence. The investigation into the incident is ongoing as the community mourns the loss of Josue Argudo.

The tragic incident has highlighted the need for stricter measures against repeat offenders and gang violence in the community. It serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of such senseless acts and the importance of ensuring that justice is served for the victims and their families.
