The Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts is currently welcoming applications for the September 2026 intake. The IDSVA PhD in Visual Arts: Philosophy, Aesthetics, and Art Theory is a unique research-based, low-residency program designed for artists and creative thinkers looking to explore the boundaries of art, culture, and human experience.
The program’s innovative curriculum combines online education with in-person residencies, allowing working art professionals to pursue advanced scholarship without compromising their existing careers. With residencies in locations such as Rome, Tuscany, Venice, Berlin, Athens, Madrid, Marrakech, Mexico City, and New York City, IDSVA offers a truly global learning experience.
One of the program’s alumni, Dr. Jason Hoelscher, shared how his IDSVA experience played a crucial role in his academic and professional development. His journey from being hired at Georgia State University to achieving tenure and eventually becoming a Full Professor at Georgia Southern University highlights the impact of IDSVA’s unique approach to doctoral education.
International applicants are also encouraged to apply, with the flexibility to complete their studies from their home country. IDSVA can provide F-1 visas for international students attending a one-week residency in the US.
For those interested in learning more about the program, Dr. Jeanne Moore, the Director of Admissions, is available for conversations. Applications for the May 2026 intake are accepted on a rolling basis, with a deadline of April 13 for September 2026 enrollment.
