OpenAI Acquires Startup Torch for $100 Million
In a recent announcement, OpenAI revealed that it has acquired a small startup called Torch for an undisclosed amount. According to sources, OpenAI paid $100 million in equity for the acquisition. Torch, a team of four individuals, will now be joining forces with OpenAI as part of the deal.
Torch was in the process of developing an innovative app that aimed to consolidate an individual’s medical information from various sources, including doctor visits, lab tests, wearables, and other health portals. Their technology was described as a “medical memory for AI” that would organize scattered records into a cohesive context engine.
The founders of Torch initially met while working at Forward Health, a company renowned for its AI-powered medical facilities. Unfortunately, Forward Health closed its doors in late 2024 despite having raised substantial funding.
However, the acquisition by OpenAI presents a new opportunity for the Torch team. Their expertise and technology will now be integrated into OpenAI’s latest offering, ChatGPT Health. This service will enable users to leverage AI chatbots for analyzing and managing their healthcare needs effectively.
