India Urges Quick-Commerce Firms to Prioritize Safety and Wellness of Gig Workers

In a move to safeguard the well-being of gig workers, India’s labor ministry has taken a proactive stance towards the booming quick-commerce sector. The country’s Minister of Labor and Employment, Mansukh Mandaviya, recently held discussions with key executives from leading quick-commerce platforms like Zomato’s BlinkIt, Swiggy’s Instamart, and Zepto. The focus of the meeting was to address concerns regarding the safety and working conditions of delivery personnel, urging companies to rethink their marketing strategies that prioritize ultra-fast deliveries.

The prevalence of instant delivery services has witnessed a significant rise in India, with consumers in urban areas becoming accustomed to receiving their orders within a remarkably short timeframe of 10 to 15 minutes. Companies such as Zepto, BlinkIt, and Instamart have invested substantial amounts in establishing “dark stores” – strategically located warehouses that act as central hubs for swift deliveries. With intense competition in the e-commerce landscape, these companies have ramped up their workforce by recruiting a large number of delivery personnel.

Post the meeting, BlinkIt has already taken steps to remove any messaging that guarantees deliveries within 10 minutes, with other industry players expected to follow suit in the near future. This decision underscores a shift towards a more sustainable and worker-friendly approach in the quick-commerce sector.

This development comes shortly after India officially recognized millions of gig and platform workers under new labor laws, outlining specific provisions for their protection. The legislation mandates aggregators, including food-delivery and ride-hailing platforms, to allocate a percentage of their revenue towards a government-managed social security fund for the benefit of gig workers.

Despite reaching out to Swiggy, BlinkIt, and Zepto for comments, there has been no immediate response from the companies regarding these recent developments.
