Reflecting on a Pivotal Moment in History: January 14, 1784

On January 14, 1784, the Second Continental Congress put its stamp of approval on the Treaty of Paris—an agreement that not only concluded the Revolutionary War but also laid the groundwork for the United States as a free and independent nation. This momentous occasion marks a celebration of the tenacity and unwavering spirit of the patriots of 1776, who were willing to risk everything for the cause of liberty.

The End of an Era: Concluding Hostilities

The cessation of conflict with the British Empire, officially declared on April 11, 1783, brought an end to eight grueling years of warfare—the most significant battle for freedom known to that point in history. After the guns fell silent, the arduous journey toward peace required not just negotiation but also moral fortitude and adept diplomacy. To navigate this complex terrain, the Second Continental Congress enlisted a trio of American heavyweights—Benjamin Franklin, John Jay, and John Adams—whose efforts were instrumental in representing American interests and strengthening our nascent Republic. The treaty itself was signed on September 3, 1783, nearly two years after the pivotal British surrender at Yorktown, and it stood as a triumphant declaration of American sovereignty.

Securing Freedom: The Ratification Process

Under the Articles of Confederation, which served as the United States’ governing framework at the time, the ratification of the treaty required the agreement of nine states. On this historic day, 242 years ago, delegates gathered in a State House in Annapolis, Maryland. With the final vote cast by South Carolina, the treaty was unanimously ratified, thus solidifying our hard-won birthright of freedom.

Looking Forward: Celebrating 250 Years of Independence

This year marks the 250th anniversary of our nation’s independence, a fitting occasion to reaffirm the principled ideals that animated our Republic over two centuries ago. We commit ourselves once again to the principles of peace through strength, the rule of law, unwavering loyalty to our citizens, and a steadfast faith in Almighty God. Above all, we pledge that the enduring truths established by our forefathers will continue to shine as a powerful beacon of hope, prosperity, and liberty for people around the globe.
