Emergency services from Dunedin have been dispatched to State Highway 8 near Lawrence after a truck and trailer carrying an excavator rolled over and started leaking diesel. The incident occurred between Lawrence and Waitahuna around 6.40pm.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) crews from Lawrence, Waitahuna, and Milton were quick to respond, with additional support sent from Dunedin to assist in cleaning up the spills. The spilled substances, believed to be a mix of fuel and hydraulic oil, posed a threat to nearby waterways.

The truck and trailer blocking SH8, with the excavator down a bank, resulted in the road’s closure between Clarks Flat Rd and Waitahuna West Rd. Motorists are advised to avoid the area or follow the designated detour route. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries from the crash.

The cause of the accident remains unknown at this time. A detour plan has been put in place for southbound and northbound traffic, although heavy vehicles are advised to find an alternative route.
