A Greenville, South Carolina police officer was the victim of a brutal ambush in his patrol car when a suspect pulled up beside him and opened fire in a shocking attack captured on surveillance video. The incident culminated in the gunman’s death after a brief pursuit.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) released a video showing a vehicle pulling into a parking lot and stopping directly next to the officer’s patrol car. Gunshots can be seen flashing in the darkness as the suspect fires at the officer before fleeing the scene, leaving the officer injured inside the vehicle. The wounded officer was quickly taken to the hospital for treatment and has since been discharged.
Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis revealed that deputies located the suspect’s vehicle, leading to a chase with multiple exchanges of gunfire. The pursuit ultimately ended in a crash with the suspect found dead inside the vehicle. The suspect was identified as David William Lane, aged 42.
The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office confirmed prior interactions with Lane before the ambush. Complaints were received from neighbors regarding Lane’s concerning behavior and comments on January 1 and 2. Despite the unsettling behavior, it did not meet the criteria for a criminal arrest warrant. As a precaution, off-duty sheriff’s deputies were hired for security at the Hunting Downs apartment complex where Lane resided.
An incident earlier in the month, captured on security video, showed Lane approaching an apartment while carrying a gun. Reports indicated that Lane had been stalking residents and making threatening statements. Both the Greenville Police Department and the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office requested the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to investigate the ambush, ensuring a thorough, independent investigation.
SLED will conduct interviews with witnesses and forensic testing before presenting its findings to prosecutors. This incident marks the second officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2026 and the first involving the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office. In 2025, the state recorded 45 officer-involved shootings, with seven involving the sheriff’s office.
