Michelangelo Buonarroti, renowned for his masterpieces in Renaissance art history, had humble beginnings as a 12-year-old artist. Unlike typical children his age, Michelangelo was deeply engrossed in drawing and painting, studying the works of established artists such as Martin Schongauer. At just 12 or 13 years old, he completed his first known painting, “The Torment of Saint Anthony,” showcasing his exceptional talent and unique style.

The painting, initially attributed to the workshop of Domenico Ghirlandaio, was later confirmed to be Michelangelo’s creation. After a meticulous restoration process, art historians were convinced of Michelangelo’s authorship, leading to its acquisition by the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth. This acquisition made it the only painting by Michelangelo in a public collection in North America.

“The Torment of Saint Anthony” depicts a scene from the life of Saint Anthony the Great, where he is attacked by demons in a vision. Michelangelo’s attention to detail and composition, along with his innovative color palette, set this painting apart as a significant early work in his career. To bring authenticity to the demonic creatures, Michelangelo reportedly studied the intricate patterns of fish scales from the local market.

While Michelangelo may not have publicly acknowledged this early painting due to its amateur nature, it provides valuable insights into his artistic development. For art historians and enthusiasts, it offers a glimpse into the creative explorations of a young Michelangelo. The restoration of this painting revealed a unique color palette and depth that showcase the artist’s budding talent.

To delve deeper into Michelangelo’s early works, art historian Erick Giraldo offers a comprehensive analysis on his YouTube channel, Inspiraggio. The video provides valuable insights into the significance of “The Torment of Saint Anthony” in Michelangelo’s artistic journey.
