SK Hynix, a leading South Korean chipmaker, is taking proactive steps to address the global memory chip shortage by accelerating the opening of a new factory and ramping up production at another plant. The surge in memory demand, driven by the increasing need for AI infrastructure, has put pressure on global supply chains and led to price hikes for consumer electronics.

In an interview with Reuters, Sungsoo Ryu, CEO of SK Hynix America, highlighted the importance of supporting memory consumption for AI infrastructure. The company plans to open the first factory at its new chip facility in Yongin, South Korea, three months ahead of schedule in February 2027. Additionally, it will begin deploying silicon wafers into a new fab, M15X, in Cheongju, South Korea, to produce high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips used by companies like Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices for AI applications.

SK Hynix’s decision to expedite its production timeline comes amidst a booming memory chip market, with prices skyrocketing more than 300% in the fourth quarter alone, according to TrendForce. This unprecedented demand has prompted customers, including hyperscalers, to seek long-term supply agreements, signaling a shift from the traditional one-year contracts.

Ryu emphasized the company’s commitment to reviewing production plans regularly to ensure it can meet customer demand in this rapidly evolving market. With the global memory chip market experiencing structural changes, SK Hynix remains focused on staying ahead of the curve and meeting the growing needs of its customers.

The fab in Yongin, part of SK Hynix’s planned 600 trillion won investment in its “Semiconductor Cluster,” is poised to play a pivotal role in the company’s expansion efforts. Analysts estimate that the capacity of the phase-one Yongin fab will be comparable to the existing complex in Icheon, home to several factories.

As the demand for memory chips continues to surge, SK Hynix’s proactive approach to expanding production capacity and meeting customer needs underscores its commitment to staying at the forefront of the evolving technology landscape. With structural changes reshaping the memory chip market, the company remains focused on innovation and agility to navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
