Political commentator Charlie Sykes criticized the Trump administration’s messaging, likening it to “Marie Antoinette,” known for her out-of-touch attitude towards the plight of the common people. Sykes, speaking on MS NOW’s “The Weeknight,” condemned Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins’ suggestion of a $3 meal deal as a response to the cost-of-living crisis exacerbated by Trump’s tariffs. He called it “one of the saddest bits of spin” he’s seen.

Sykes pointed out a pattern in the administration’s messaging, citing Rollins’ advice on getting chickens to combat high egg prices and Trump’s comments on being content with fewer toys and pencils. He sarcastically remarked, “Oh, happy days are here again if you get those things.”

Highlighting the disconnect between the administration and middle America, Sykes criticized Rollins for lacking an understanding of the struggles faced by ordinary citizens. He emphasized the irony of Trump touting a “Golden Age” while investing in a $400 million ballroom.

According to Sykes, the administration’s tone deafness and lack of empathy towards middle-class Americans are evident in their messaging. He suggested that Rollins, in particular, is out of touch with the realities of everyday people.
