A Hacker Exposes Personal Data of Victims on Instagram

A recent court document revealed that Nicholas Moore, a 24-year-old resident of Springfield, Tennessee, pleaded guilty to hacking into various government systems. Moore, who goes by the Instagram handle @ihackthegovernment, accessed the U.S. Supreme Court’s electronic document filing system, AmeriCorps network, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Using stolen credentials, Moore infiltrated these systems and stole personal data from authorized users. He then brazenly posted some of this information on his Instagram account, showcasing the extent of his cyber intrusions.

For instance, Moore exposed the personal information of his victims, including their names, contact details, citizenship status, service history, and even health information. The court document highlighted specific cases where Moore posted sensitive data, such as electronic filing records from the Supreme Court, personal details from AmeriCorps volunteers, and health records from a Department of Veterans Affairs’ patient.

The severity of Moore’s actions is underscored by the potential legal consequences he faces. According to the court filing, he could be sentenced to up to one year in prison and fined a maximum of $100,000 for his cybercrimes.
