Chicago Police Issue Warning After Recent Surge in Honda Civic Airbag Thefts

Chicago police have issued a warning to residents of Hyde Park and East Hyde Park following a series of break-ins targeting Honda Civics in the area. At least three vehicles have been stripped of their airbags in recent weeks, part of a nationwide trend driven by a lucrative black market for these safety devices.

The thefts took place between January 5 and January 15 in the 5100 and 5300 blocks of South Dorchester Avenue and South Shore Drive. In each instance, thieves smashed vehicle windows to access and remove the steering wheel airbags from Honda Civics, according to the police alert.

Airbag theft, especially from Honda vehicles, has been on the rise across many states. Thieves are able to remove these devices in as little as 20 seconds and sell them on the black market for hundreds of dollars. Due to Honda’s popularity, the brand is a consistent target, with parts in high demand for both legitimate and illegal purposes.

The significant price difference between legitimate and illicit airbags is a driving factor behind these thefts. The National Insurance Crime Bureau reports that approximately 50,000 airbags are stolen each year nationwide. Factory replacement airbags can cost around $1,000, while black market alternatives are sold for a fraction of that price.

A search on Facebook Marketplace revealed numerous Honda airbags for sale in the Chicagoland area, with prices ranging from $120 to $400 each. It is difficult to determine whether these airbags are legitimate or stolen.

The surge in airbag thefts has created a backlog in orders for legitimate parts, leading to lengthy delays for crime victims in need of replacements. Some frustrated owners have turned to the black market out of necessity, further exacerbating the issue.

In a troubling development, the National Insurance Crime Bureau has reported that certain dishonest auto shops are installing stolen black market airbags while charging insurance companies for factory replacement prices.

Experts suggest parking in well-lit areas and using a club-style steering wheel lock as deterrents against airbag theft. However, these measures offer limited protection at best.

As the community grapples with this wave of thefts, it is crucial for residents to remain vigilant and take precautions to safeguard their vehicles and belongings. Stay informed and stay safe.
