St. Johns County in Florida achieved a remarkable milestone in 2025 by going the entire year without a single homicide. This accomplishment is even more significant considering the county’s size and population, with over 300,000 residents. According to a report by the St. Johns Citizen, St. Johns County stands out as the only county among the 100 largest in the US to achieve this feat.
Sheriff Robert Hardwick of St. Johns County expressed his gratitude for this achievement, stating, “Sometimes you whisper accomplishments because you don’t want to take them for granted. We’re truly blessed.” He emphasized that the success was not due to a single factor but rather a combination of various variables working together.
While there were two fatal shootings reported in the county, both incidents were officer-involved shootings deemed justified and therefore not classified as criminal homicides. Sheriff Hardwick praised the support from county leaders, who have provided the necessary resources, training, and funding to ensure the safety of residents. Nearly 80% of the sheriff’s office budget goes towards salaries and benefits, highlighting the commitment to maintaining public safety.
Hardwick attributed the success to the approval of the budget by commissioners, allowing investments in technology, agency members, and equipment. He also acknowledged the role of the community in reporting suspicious activities and allowing law enforcement to do their job effectively. Despite the zero homicide record in 2025, the sheriff emphasized the need to address domestic violence cases and violations of protection orders to sustain this achievement in the future.
Looking ahead, Sheriff Hardwick recognized that there is still work to be done to maintain the zero homicide streak. He emphasized the importance of community involvement and vigilance in reporting any potential threats. By working together and staying focused, St. Johns County aims to continue prioritizing public safety and building on the success of 2025.
