A man, Adam Michael Hubac, was sentenced to 150 hours of community work and disqualified from driving for a year after crashing his car while drunk with his pregnant partner in the passenger seat. Hubac tried to blame his partner for the crash, but seatbelt injuries revealed he was the one behind the wheel. The incident occurred in October in the Lee Valley south of Nelson.

In addition to the charges related to the crash, Hubac was also sentenced on cannabis charges after police found drug paraphernalia and cannabis in the car. Judge Tony Snell highlighted Hubac’s history of offending, including previous charges of driving with excess breath alcohol.

The crash occurred when Hubac lost control of the car on Lee Valley Rd, causing it to overturn and land on its roof. Despite being disqualified from driving, Hubac left the scene to seek help for his injured partner, who was 28 weeks pregnant at the time.

Police identified Hubac as a disqualified driver with a high breath alcohol level after the crash. Evidence of drug use was also found at the scene. Hubac initially denied driving but was later proven to be the driver based on the seatbelt injuries sustained by him and his partner.

Judge Snell emphasized the seriousness of Hubac’s actions, driving drunk while disqualified and knowing there were issues with the car. Despite his modest history of offending, including previous assault charges, Hubac was sentenced to 150 hours of community work and a 12-month driving disqualification after pleading guilty.
