Singer-Songwriter Anna Witiuk Shares Her Story Through “That Paradise Place”

Anna Witiuk, a singer-songwriter who has undergone multiple open heart surgeries due to Marfan syndrome, will be showcasing her journey on stage tonight at the Abrons Arts Center. Her experiences with disabilities and surgeries have shaped her life and her ability to sing, adding a new layer of complexity to her artistry.

In a recent interview with Hyperallergic, Witiuk expressed the challenges faced by artists with disabilities, who are often either put on a pedestal as inspirations or marginalized and overlooked. She hopes that her performance in That Paradise Place will shed light on the realities of living with a disability while celebrating love and fantasies.

That Paradise Place is a unique production by Summertime Gallery, exploring the romantic and sexual experiences of 12 artists with disabilities. The show uses massive puppet alter-egos to delve into the intimate desires and fantasies of individuals whose disabilities impact various aspects of their lives.

Pussypaws Puppetry, the experimental puppet troupe behind the production, was founded by Priscilla Frank and Alana Hauser. Inspired by the stories shared at YAI Arts and Culture, the duo decided to create a show that celebrates the diverse and often unseen aspects of love and sexuality within the disabled community.

The show centers around 12 real stories from artists who opened up about their aspirations for love, sexual desires, and erotic fantasies.

Through songs like “Demon Daddies Full of Love” and “Busty Goddesses Full of Love,” the production explores a range of emotions and desires, from playful to profound. Each song tells a unique story, including that of Chris Chronopoulos, a cosplay artist who found love in middle school and now brings his experiences to life on stage.

While tickets for the show are sold out, the soundtrack is available on Spotify for those who want to experience the stories through music. Priscilla Frank and Alana Hauser are hopeful about expanding the production in the future, as they aim to showcase the beauty and creativity of individuals with disabilities.

As That Paradise Place continues to captivate audiences with its heartfelt and empowering narratives, it serves as a reminder that art knows no boundaries and that every individual has a story worth sharing. Through puppetry and music, the show celebrates the resilience and creativity of artists with disabilities, offering a glimpse into a world that is often overlooked but rich with beauty and inspiration.

Inspiration for the show originated during the 2020 pandemic when the production’s director Priscilla Frank was working at the arts nonprofit YAI Arts and Culture.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about significant changes in the way we live our lives. From social distancing measures to remote work, the way we interact with each other has been completely transformed. As we continue to navigate this new normal, it is important to take a moment to reflect on the impact that this pandemic has had on our society as a whole.

One of the most noticeable changes brought about by the pandemic is the shift towards remote work. With many businesses forced to close their physical offices, employees were required to work from home. This has led to a rise in the use of video conferencing tools such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams, as well as a greater reliance on email and other forms of digital communication. While remote work has its benefits, such as increased flexibility and reduced commute times, it has also brought about challenges such as feelings of isolation and difficulties in separating work and personal life.

Another significant change brought about by the pandemic is the increased emphasis on public health and safety. Social distancing measures, mask mandates, and increased sanitation protocols have become the new normal in many places. While these measures are necessary to prevent the spread of the virus, they have also led to feelings of anxiety and uncertainty among many people. Additionally, the pandemic has highlighted existing disparities in access to healthcare, with marginalized communities being disproportionately affected by the virus.

The pandemic has also had a profound impact on the economy. Many businesses have been forced to close their doors permanently, leading to widespread job losses and financial insecurity. The government has implemented various stimulus packages to help alleviate the economic impact of the pandemic, but many people continue to struggle to make ends meet. The pandemic has also highlighted the importance of essential workers, such as healthcare workers, grocery store employees, and delivery drivers, who have continued to work on the front lines despite the risks to their health.

As we continue to navigate the challenges brought about by the pandemic, it is important to remember the resilience and strength of the human spirit. Communities have come together to support one another in times of need, and individuals have shown remarkable adaptability in the face of adversity. While the road ahead may be uncertain, we can take comfort in knowing that we are all in this together. By working together and supporting one another, we can overcome the challenges of the pandemic and emerge stronger on the other side.
