Colorado Leaders Urge Trump Administration to Approve Aid for Natural Disasters

Colorado’s elected officials are once again pleading with the Trump administration to approve much-needed aid for floods and wildfires that ravaged the state last year. Despite President Trump denying previous requests for assistance, all 10 members of Colorado’s congressional delegation, including Senators Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper, have sent a letter to the White House emphasizing the urgent need for funding following the Lee and Elk fires in August and severe flooding in southwest Colorado in October.

The delegation’s letter comes on the heels of Governor Jared Polis’ formal appeal of the president’s denials, which were filed last Friday. The disasters caused nearly $39 million in claimed damages, with the federal government typically covering 75% of the costs. With the state currently responsible for over $29 million in expenses that would typically be federally funded, the need for assistance is critical.

Despite the mounting costs and challenges faced by Coloradans, the Trump administration has not responded to the latest appeal for aid. State officials have expressed concerns about the lack of federal support, with Division Director Kevin Klein indicating that future assistance from FEMA is unlikely. In light of these uncertainties, Governor Polis and the congressional delegation are urging the federal government to step in and assist in the state’s recovery efforts.

In addition to the recent denials of aid, President Trump has taken other actions that have directly impacted Colorado, such as relocating the Space Command headquarters and vetoing a bill crucial for clean water infrastructure in rural communities. The state is now faced with the challenge of securing resources to address ongoing recovery needs and enhance emergency management infrastructure to mitigate future disasters.

As Colorado continues to grapple with the aftermath of devastating wildfires and floods, the unity and persistence of its leaders in advocating for federal aid remain paramount. Stay informed on the latest developments in Colorado politics by signing up for our weekly newsletter, The Spot.
