The Global Environment Outlook 7 warns that the world is on the brink of irreversible climate-related thresholds in the next 25 years. The potential collapse of the Greenland and Western Antarctic ice sheets, release of methane from thawing permafrost, and the possible transformation of the Amazon rainforest into a savannah are just a few of the catastrophic events looming on the horizon. The impact of these tipping points could be devastating, leading to a rise in sea levels, loss of crucial ecosystems, and disruption of climate patterns.

The pervasive influence of capitalism has infiltrated every aspect of our lives, from technology to remote indigenous communities. The relentless pursuit of profit at all costs has driven innovation but also contributed to the current ecological crisis. Capitalism’s relentless expansion has led to the degradation of the environment, with no clear path towards sustainability or meaningful change.

The destructive nature of capitalism is evident in the actions of tech billionaires and fossil fuel companies, who prioritize profit over the well-being of the planet. Market-based solutions and weak international agreements have failed to address the root causes of environmental degradation, perpetuating the cycle of destruction.

The elite few who benefit from capitalism’s exploitation of people and planet are building bunkers to shield themselves from the consequences of their actions. Instead of seeking ethical and sustainable solutions, they choose to escape the impending climate apocalypse, leaving the rest of the world to fend for themselves.

Despite the grim outlook, there is hope for a different future. By envisioning a society based on democratic planning, collective ownership, and universal provision of services, we can strive for a sustainable and equitable world. Ecosocialism offers a path towards a future where human well-being and environmental health are prioritized over profit and power.

The fight against climate change is inseparable from the struggle against imperialism, colonialism, and capitalism. It is a call to arms for collective action and revolutionary change to ensure the survival of humanity and the planet. Simon Hannah, author and union activist, advocates for a future where the powers and principalities of capitalism are challenged, and a new world order based on sustainability and justice rises to meet the challenges of our times.
