Inter Miami, led by Lionel Messi, faced a setback as their new signing Sergio Reguilon suffered an ankle injury during a pre-season match. The Spanish left-back sustained the injury during the Herons’ 3-0 victory over Alianza Lima.
Reguilon was brought in by Inter Miami during the January transfer window in preparation for the upcoming 2026 MLS season. His addition was crucial for the team, especially considering their defensive struggles in the previous season. The left-back made his debut in the match against Alianza Lima on January 24, but his game was cut short due to the injury.
Reports from Athlon Sports revealed that Reguilon could only play for 10 minutes before being substituted off after winning a free kick. Facundo Mura replaced him, and Inter Miami went on to concede three goals, including a brace from Alianza Lima’s Paolo Guerrero.
The club has been busy in the transfer market, bringing in a total of 13 new players. Six of these signings made their debut in the match against Alianza Lima. With Lionel Messi leading the team to their first MLS Cup victory last year, the focus this season is on building on that success under the guidance of manager Javier Mascherano.
Speaking about the new signings, Mascherano highlighted the positions that needed reinforcement due to departures from the squad. He mentioned the replacements for players like Chelo Weigandt, Sergio Reguilon, and Sergio Busquets, emphasizing the need to strengthen key areas of the team.
Inter Miami’s first five games of the season will be played away from home, as the construction of the Miami Freedom Park is still in progress. The team’s first home game is scheduled for April 4 against Austin FC. This season, the Herons are aiming to clinch titles like the Leagues Cup and the CONCACAF Champions Cup, which eluded them in the previous campaign.
As the team gears up for the new season, the focus is on building a strong squad that can compete for trophies under the leadership of Messi and Mascherano. The fans are eagerly anticipating the start of the MLS season, with high hopes for another successful campaign for Inter Miami.
