AI-Generated Encyclopedia Associated with Elon Musk’s xAI Finds Its Way into ChatGPT Answers
The conservative-leaning, AI-generated encyclopedia developed by Elon Musk’s xAI is starting to make its presence felt in responses generated by ChatGPT. Grokipedia, launched by xAI in October as an alternative to what Musk perceived as a biased Wikipedia, has been gaining attention for its controversial content.
While Grokipedia has been criticized for directly copying articles from Wikipedia, it has also stirred controversy by making statements such as attributing pornography to the AIDS crisis and providing justifications for slavery. Additionally, the use of derogatory terms towards transgender individuals has raised concerns about the encyclopedia’s credibility.
Despite its controversial nature, Grokipedia’s content is now being referenced outside of the xAI ecosystem. Reports indicate that GPT-5.2, a version of ChatGPT, cited Grokipedia in response to several questions. However, it is worth noting that Grokipedia was not referenced for topics where its accuracy has been questioned, such as the January 6 insurrection and the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
According to The Guardian, ChatGPT seems to rely on Grokipedia for more obscure topics, even citing information that has been debunked by reputable sources like The Guardian itself. This trend raises concerns about the reliability and impartiality of the information being disseminated by AI-powered platforms.
In response to these developments, an OpenAI spokesperson emphasized the organization’s commitment to drawing information from a diverse range of sources and viewpoints. However, the integration of content from controversial sources like Grokipedia highlights the challenges of ensuring accuracy and credibility in AI-generated responses.
