The fascination with grand estates and opulent interiors has always been a hallmark of the wealthy in society. From high-ceilinged rooms to impressive art collections, these aristocratic obsessions have been well-documented in historic properties like Attingham Park in Shropshire. However, there is a different kind of allure to be found in rooms in miniature.

Artist Gretchen Scherer finds inspiration in centuries-old rooms from grand houses and institutions, using them as the basis for her series of paintings of luminous interiors. Drawing from photos sourced online, books, and her own snapshots, Scherer also takes cues from artists like Narcissa Niblack Thorne, who created meticulously crafted miniatures of period rooms. She then infuses her work with a sense of depth by playing with perspective.

Scherer’s upcoming solo show, “Reading the Rooms,” at Richard Heller Gallery, showcases her talent for bringing historic locations to life with a contemporary twist. Each painting is a vibrant depiction of a room filled with paintings, period furnishings, and intricate details that transport viewers to a bygone era. The bright, lively palette adds a modern touch to these historical settings, creating a visual feast for the eyes.

In Scherer’s paintings, every object is meticulously rendered, from books to candlesticks to noble portraits. The intricate details draw the viewer’s eye around the canvas, creating a sense of exploration within the two-dimensional space. The rooms feel alive and bustling, with furniture arranged around art displays and doorways leading to unseen chambers.

The artist’s work oscillates between the real and the imagined, using fixed locations to highlight the tension between the two. By incorporating elements from actual collections, Scherer breathes life into her paintings, turning each one into a miniature world of its own. “Reading the Rooms” promises to be a captivating exploration of history, art, and imagination.
