A Colorado State Patrol Trooper Injured in Pursuit of Wrong-Way Driver

Early Wednesday morning, a Colorado State Patrol trooper sustained injuries while attempting to apprehend a wrong-way driver suspected of driving under the influence on Interstate 25, as reported by the agency.

The incident unfolded when troopers received reports of a wrong-way driver heading south on northbound I-25, approximately 11 miles north of Pueblo, at 3:45 a.m. Wednesday, according to a news release from the Colorado State Patrol.

The female driver of a 2021 Honda sedan changed directions before reaching Pueblo and began traveling north on northbound I-25 near mile marker 117, according to state patrol officials.

Although initially evading law enforcement’s attempts to pull her over, the Honda driver was eventually stopped by troopers at mile marker 123, near the Pikes Peak International Raceway. One trooper tried to block the driver in by parking in front of the Honda, as stated in the release.

Tragically, a 2001 Hummer collided with the state patrol vehicle during this incident, resulting in injuries to both the Hummer driver and the trooper who were subsequently transported to hospitals for treatment.

Following the crash, the Honda driver fled the scene but was apprehended by Fountain police officers. She was arrested on charges of driving under the influence, failing to yield, and driving in the wrong direction.

Authorities in Colorado Springs are conducting an investigation into the collision involving the Hummer and the state patrol trooper, while Colorado State Patrol troopers are handling the case of the wrong-way driver.
