Aharon Andrés Cardona became a member of the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae in Colombia in 1993 as a teenager with the intention of assisting others. However, he soon discovered that his desire to help others would be met with years of physical and psychological abuse. The group, known for molding upper-class boys into “soldiers for God,” subjected Cardona and his companions to rigorous physical exercises, limited sleep, and punishments such as eating only lettuce and water for days.

Cardona’s experience mirrors that of many former members who have come forward with allegations of abuse within the organization. Pope Francis recently expelled 10 members, including the leader of Cardona’s community, for what the Vatican described as “sadistic” abuses of power. Despite the expulsion, the Sodalitium has maintained a strong presence in Colorado, where it has been entrusted with a parish and where some of its high-ranking leaders have been relocated.

Founded in Peru in 1971, the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae grew in size under the leadership of Luis Fernando Figari, who was revered as a charismatic and spiritual figure. However, allegations of sexual, physical, and spiritual abuse have plagued the group, leading to Figari’s expulsion from the Vatican in 2023. The group has since apologized to victims and made efforts to address the harm caused by its actions.

In Denver, the Sodalitium’s operations have continued, with close ties to the local Archdiocese. Members have described a culture of indoctrination and manipulation within the group, with physical and psychological tests designed to break down individuals and make them dependent on the organization. The group’s presence in Colorado has raised concerns about financial mismanagement and the safety of its members.

Despite the recent expulsions and investigations, former members like Cardona believe that the entire institution should be dismantled to prevent further harm. The legacy of abuse within the Sodalitium serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked power and authority within religious organizations.
