Extreme weather events such as winter storms can have deadly consequences. The recent snowstorm in the United States resulted in at least 30 deaths, with many of them attributed to hypothermia and medical emergencies while clearing snow. The storm dumped more than a foot of snow in 19 states, leaving nearly 400,000 people without power. Shoveling snow, a seemingly harmless activity, can actually pose significant health risks, especially for the heart. The physical exertion of shoveling coupled with the cold weather can increase heart rate and blood pressure, putting a strain on the cardiovascular system.

In the world of pharmaceuticals, Korean company Sam Chun Dang Pharm has seen a surge in investor optimism due to the development of a new weight-loss pill. The company’s chairman, Yoon Dae-in, has become a billionaire as a result, with a net worth estimated at $2.1 billion. The company recently signed an agreement with Japanese drug maker Daiichi Sankyo to further develop and commercialize the weight-loss pill. This move will put Sam Chun Dang in a competitive market alongside established players like Lilly and Novo Nordisk.

Meanwhile, in the realm of artificial intelligence, OpenEvidence founder Daniel Nadler’s wealth has soared to $7.6 billion following a successful $250 million fundraising round. OpenEvidence is an AI-based search tool that helps doctors quickly access complex clinical information. The startup has become a vital tool for physicians, with over 740,000 doctors in the United States using the platform for clinical consultations.

In the biotech industry, veterans of BioMarin Pharmaceuticals have raised $82 million to launch Mendra, a new biotech company focused on using artificial intelligence to develop therapies for rare diseases. The financing round was led by prominent investors OrbiMed, 8VC, and 5AM Ventures. Mendra’s CEO, Joshua Grass, brings 15 years of experience from BioMarin Pharmaceuticals to the table, positioning the company as a promising player in the biotech space.
