As winter weather blankets the nation in snow and ice, the risk of slipping and falling on icy sidewalks becomes a serious concern. To avoid potential injuries, it is crucial to take precautions when venturing outside in icy conditions. One expert suggests walking like a penguin to minimize the risk of slipping and falling.

Gabriela Murza, a health and wellness extension associate professor at Utah State University, recommends adopting a penguin-like walking style to navigate icy sidewalks safely. By keeping your feet flat and taking shorter steps, you can increase stability and reduce the likelihood of slipping. This walking technique allows for more surface area contact with the ground and helps to keep your weight centered, preventing falls.

In addition to adjusting your walking style, Murza advises keeping your knees slightly bent to reduce pressure on your lower back and increase stability. It is also essential to avoid distractions while walking on icy surfaces, such as using your phone or keeping your hands in your pockets. By keeping your hands free and arms bent, you can react quickly if you start to slip and protect yourself from potential injuries.

Furthermore, it is crucial to remain vigilant, especially during the early morning or late at night when temperatures are at their lowest. Be on the lookout for hidden ice under snow or meltwater, as well as transparent “black ice” that can be difficult to spot. By staying alert and taking precautions, you can reduce the risk of slipping and falling on icy sidewalks.

As we navigate the challenges of winter weather, it is essential to prioritize safety and take proactive measures to prevent injuries. By walking like a penguin and following expert recommendations, you can safely navigate icy sidewalks and enjoy the beauty of winter without the fear of slipping and falling. Stay safe and mindful while walking in icy conditions to ensure a smooth and injury-free winter season.
