Robert Wun recently unveiled his latest couture collection, titled “Valor: The Desire to Create, and the Courage to Carry On,” at the iconic Lido cabaret. Despite the venue’s reputation for extravagance and glitz, Wun had a different vision in mind for his show.
The designer’s fascination with thunderstorms served as a central theme throughout the collection. Growing up in Hong Kong, where typhoons are a regular occurrence, Wun has always found solace in watching the storm rage outside from the comfort of his home. This love for thunderstorms was translated into a series of videos that played in the background of the runway show, setting the mood for a collection that delved into the emotional journey of creation.
Divided into three acts, the collection began with “Library,” a nod to the quiet dreams that are born between the pages of books. Drawing inspiration from his old fashion school sketchbooks, Wun presented a series of monochrome silhouettes that featured sculpted shapes, fitted bodices, and exaggerated shoulders. The standout piece was a massive gown encrusted with micro glass beads, weighing an impressive 40 kilos.
The second act, titled “Luxury: Confrontation of Reality,” explored the clash between creative ideals and the harsh realities of the luxury industry. Models strutted down the runway in molded bodices resembling high-jewelry display stands, adorned with diamond necklaces and crystal-encrusted face masks. Pointy-breasted corsets and draped skirts completed the look, creating a sense of opulence and extravagance.
The final act, “Valor,” celebrated the courage and determination of creators who continue to pursue their dreams against all odds. A suit of gleaming silver armor, complete with a sword, made a dramatic appearance on the runway, symbolizing the bravery required to navigate the world of fashion. The show concluded with a veiled figure in a sequined gown inspired by thunderstorm shades, disappearing into the darkness with a sense of mystery and allure.
Wun explained that the collection was a reflection of the emotional journey of creation, from inspiration to desire and ultimately, the courage to move forward. In a world that often questions the relevance of couture, he emphasized that the art form endures because it represents our aspirations and dreams. Couture, according to Wun, is a manifestation of the creator’s courage and unwavering commitment to the creative process.
In essence, Wun’s collection embodies the spirit of resilience, creativity, and the unyielding pursuit of dreams. With armor on and dreams intact, the designer invites us to embrace the courage to create and carry on, no matter the challenges we may face.
