At 10.30am on Saturday, Arrowtown resident Brent Wallace made history in Queenstown by becoming the first person to ride Skyline’s luge for a continuous 24 hours.

Originally from Gore, Mr. Wallace used this incredible feat to raise funds for Gumboot Friday, an important initiative of Mike King’s I Am Hope Foundation.

Having faced bullying and trauma himself, Mr. Wallace understood the urgent need for effective mental health support programs.

Throughout the challenge, Mr. Wallace and his supporters completed an impressive 257 laps of the luge track, covering approximately 200km in the cart. Despite facing challenging weather conditions, including snow on Saturday morning, they persevered.

Mr. Wallace’s strategy included using a pillow from the beginning, which proved beneficial for endurance. He also received additional pillows from Crowne Plaza to assist with comfort during the event.

The support from Skyline Queenstown was greatly appreciated by Mr. Wallace.

As of yesterday afternoon, Mr. Wallace had raised over $10,000 on his Givealittle page for the charity, nearing his $100,000 fundraising goal.

While aiming for a higher amount, Mr. Wallace acknowledged the significant challenge of reaching $100,000.

He expressed plans to undertake the challenge again next year, potentially at Skyline’s Rotorua luge.
