Metro Denver School Districts Cancel Classes Due to Staff Shortages

Two metro Denver school districts, Aurora Public Schools and Adams 14, have announced the cancellation of all classes on Friday due to expected staff shortages.

Aurora Public Schools and Pickens Technical College will be closed as the district anticipates a higher number of staff absences. The decision was made to ensure the safety and well-being of the students and staff.

Adams 14 Superintendent Karla Loría stated on social media that the district is expecting a high number of student and staff absences on Friday. As a result, it will be a teacher and staff work day, with no students in class.

This announcement comes ahead of Friday’s nationwide ICE Out protests and general strike, in response to recent events in Minneapolis and immigration crackdown tactics in Minnesota.

Several Denver-area restaurants will also be closed on Friday, with some donating a percentage of their profits to local immigrant rights organizations.

Aurora Public School officials expressed their commitment to providing critical support to students but emphasized the importance of ensuring a safe and operational school environment.

For Aurora students, Friday will be a Professional Release Day, originally scheduled for Feb. 6, which will now be a regular school day. High school athletics will continue as scheduled.
