Man Found Shot in Legs Outside Marquette Park Laundromat

Chicago police responded to a call early Sunday morning reporting a man with gunshot wounds outside a laundromat in Marquette Park. The 45-year-old victim, who is homeless, was discovered by a passerby who immediately dialed 911 for help.

Although the nearest report of shots fired was a mile away at 69th and Springfield, the victim had been shot following an argument with another man in the 6600 block of South Kedzie. The assailant returned to the scene with a firearm and shot the victim in both legs around 1:03 a.m.

The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds in his legs but was in good condition when police arrived at the scene. The incident took place in the 14th ward, represented by Ald. Jeylu Gutierrez, who had supported the use of ShotSpotter technology in the city.

Mayor Brandon Johnson’s decision to terminate the city’s contract with ShotSpotter was met with opposition from many aldermen, citizens, victim’s advocates, and law enforcement officials. The “Brandon’s Bodies” reporting series aims to highlight cases where gunshot detection technology could have aided in police investigations and potentially saved lives.
