In the tumultuous beginning of 2026, the actions of President Trump have sent shockwaves through the Western Hemisphere, plunging it into a state of uncertainty and danger unseen for quite some time. The abduction of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores in Venezuela has sparked outrage both domestically and internationally, as it violated numerous laws and principles. The incursion was carried out without the approval of Congress as mandated by the War Powers Resolution, and it blatantly disregarded the United Nations’ charter and the core tenets of the Organization of American States.

Initially, the Trump administration justified the military operation by accusing President Maduro of leading an international drug trafficking organization known as the Cartel de los Soles. However, it was later revealed that this was a fabricated claim, as the term “Cartel de los Soles” actually referred to corrupt military leaders within Venezuela. In fact, data from the UN’s Office on Drugs and Crime showed that Venezuela is not a major supplier of narcotics to the United States.

The true motive behind the incursion became evident when it was discovered that President Trump and his allies sought to seize Venezuela’s vast fossil fuel and mineral resources. This blatant act of resource exploitation and imperialism harkened back to the outdated Monroe Doctrine, a doctrine that asserts the United States’ entitlement to exert control and influence over the Western Hemisphere. This revival of imperial ambitions has been dubbed the “Donroe Doctrine” by some, highlighting the administration’s aggressive and self-serving approach to foreign policy.

Contrary to the Trump administration’s assertions, the Monroe Doctrine is not a blueprint for democracy or freedom, but rather a tool for domination and exploitation. The administration’s actions in Venezuela serve as a stark reminder of the United States’ long history of interventionism in Latin America, driven by a sense of entitlement and superiority.

In contrast to this imperialistic mindset, leaders like Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brazil advocate for a more collaborative and respectful approach to international relations. They emphasize the importance of non-intervention and sovereignty in Latin American affairs, rejecting the notion of subordination and domination by external powers.

The Trump administration’s obsession with fossil fuel capitalism and resource extraction not only threatens regional stability but also exacerbates the global climate crisis. The push for increased oil production in Venezuela, a country already grappling with social, economic, and climate challenges, could have devastating consequences for the environment and the millions of displaced Venezuelans.

As the world grapples with the repercussions of the Trump administration’s aggressive foreign policy, it is crucial to uphold the rule of law and respect the sovereignty of all nations in the Western Hemisphere. A world based on collaboration, cooperation, and mutual respect is not only possible but essential for the well-being of all people in the region and beyond. It is time to reject the outdated and destructive notion that might makes right and strive for a more just and equitable world for all.
