Fashion is more than just clothing—it’s a form of expression that conveys attitude and emotions. Sezgin Kivrim, the creative director of the Berlin-based brand Sezgin, understands this concept well. Together with his good friend Angelina Schwarzkopf, they aim to create collections that embody togetherness, exchange, and joy. Their latest collection, titled “When the sun hasn’t reached us yet,” is inspired by a family evening in Kurdistan.
The collection features a mix of elegant and comfortable pieces, such as wide-legged, knee-length trousers paired with a large knit sweater in a bold red hue. Knitwear is a standout in Sezgin’s designs, with pieces like a short-sleeved vest in a light pink shade woven with colorful threads. Cultural references are woven into modern fabrics, creating a contemporary aesthetic that is both unique and timeless.
Sezgin’s previous success in the German fashion scene came with an oversized crocheted sweater featuring the Kurdish flag. While the flag is no longer a focal point in the current collection, Kivrim incorporates the sun—a culturally significant symbol—into his designs. This balance between culture and fashion is a central theme in his work, reflecting his personal journey as a member of the Kurdish diaspora in Germany.
The collection was presented in Berlin, showcasing pieces like a slip dress made from sheer fabric that can also be worn as a tunic. Another standout piece is a mesh top with embroidered sun motifs, paired with a white mini dress. New to this collection is a floral print fabric sourced from family deadstock, inspired by Kivrim’s grandmother’s wardrobe in Kurdistan.
The presentation of the collection highlighted cultural connections, with models braiding each other’s hair and sharing sunflower seeds and tea. Kivrim’s goal is to create a collection that can be worn across seasons, with pieces that are highly adaptable and size-inclusive. The sense of community and support is evident in the design approach, reflecting the Kurdish tradition of sharing and borrowing clothes to create a cohesive collection where everything can be mixed and matched seamlessly.
Sezgin’s deeply empathetic approach to fashion resonates with people from all backgrounds, as seen in the positive feedback from a Japanese buyer who understood the message behind the collection. By blending cultural influences with modern design, Sezgin creates pieces that are not only stylish but also meaningful, bridging the gap between tradition and innovation in the world of fashion.
