Tennis journalist Jon Wertheim has raised concerns over Andrey Rublev’s temperamental behavior, which led to the Russian injuring his knee during a recent match at the Paris Masters. Wertheim suggested that Rublev should seek psychological help to address his emotional outbursts and also proposed changes to the ATP code of conduct to address such incidents.

Rublev suffered a 6-7(6), 6-7(5) defeat against Francisco Cerundolo in the second round of the 2024 Paris Masters. During the match, Rublev was seen hitting his knee repeatedly with his racket, causing it to bleed. This incident caught the attention of Jon Wertheim, who took to Twitter to express his serious concerns about the situation and the need for psychological support for the Russian player.

In a retweet of a video showing Rublev striking his knee with his racket, Wertheim emphasized the need for sports psychology intervention and suggested that the ATP code of conduct should address such behavior as harm or abuse, rather than self-harm or abuse. This, according to Wertheim, could serve as a deterrent for such actions in the future.

The loss at the Paris Masters has implications for Rublev’s chances of qualifying for the ATP Finals, with players like Alex de Minaur and Grigor Dimitrov looking to capitalize on his defeat. Rublev’s emotional outbursts have been a recurring issue throughout his career, with the player himself acknowledging his struggles with controlling his temper in moments of intense competition.

In a previous interview posted on Reddit, Rublev opened up about his emotional reactions when his desires to succeed are not met, leading to panic and inadequate responses. Despite these challenges, Rublev has had a successful season, winning two titles and maintaining a strong record in various tournaments.

As Rublev continues to compete and strive for a place in the ATP Finals, addressing his emotional struggles and seeking support for his mental well-being could be crucial in helping him overcome his temperamental issues and perform at his best on the court. With the right guidance and intervention, Rublev has the potential to channel his passion and drive for success in a more positive and constructive manner.
