The disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, has been deemed a kidnapping by Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos. Authorities believe she was abducted and did not leave home willingly.
Nanos stated, “I believe she was abducted, yes. She didn’t walk from there. She didn’t go willingly.”
Guthrie, who requires medication within 24 hours to prevent dire consequences, is considered to be in danger. Law enforcement is treating her disappearance as a criminal act.
Family members contacted authorities after she failed to attend church services and was last seen on Saturday. A search of her home near Tucson indicated the presence of a potential crime scene.
Nanos emphasized that Guthrie’s limited mobility rules out the possibility of her leaving on her own accord. He indicated that there are suspicious circumstances at the scene, leading them to conclude that a crime was committed.
Despite physical limitations, Guthrie is mentally sound according to Nanos. Her disappearance is not related to dementia, and her family is urging the community to provide any information that could aid in her safe return.

Efforts to locate Guthrie involved a widespread search by law enforcement agencies and volunteers. Nanos is urging the community to come forward with any information that could assist in the investigation.
Savannah Guthrie and the “Today” show hosts have addressed the situation, with Guthrie expressing her focus on the safe return of her mother. The show’s spokesperson confirmed that the family is collaborating with authorities to locate her.
Guthrie had appeared on the “Today” show recently, praising Tucson for its quality of life. The community is urged to report any sightings or information that could aid in bringing Nancy Guthrie back home.
