Chicago police officers were involved in a tense exchange of gunfire with a suspect during an attempted auto theft in the South Chicago neighborhood on Thursday morning. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the gunfire, but a firearm was recovered at the scene.
The incident unfolded around 11:32 a.m. when officers were alerted to three males trying to steal a vehicle in the 8000 block of South Crandon Avenue. Responding quickly, the officers located the suspects in a nearby alley and engaged them. Shots were fired, prompting the officers to declare a “10-1” police emergency. The intensity of the situation could be heard in the background of radio transmissions as officers provided updates to dispatchers.
Despite the chaotic scene, all three suspects were eventually taken into custody. Additionally, a firearm was found at the scene. One of the suspects suffered a minor laceration to his hand, while an officer sustained a minor injury during the confrontation.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) announced that they would be sending investigators to the scene on South Crandon Avenue. They urged anyone with information about the incident to contact their office at 312-746-3609.
