CNN data chief Harry Enten stated on Wednesday that a majority of Americans have doubts about President Donald Trump’s commitment to free and fair elections. This comes after Trump’s proposal for the federal government to take control of voting operations in various states.
Enten emphasized that transferring local power to the federal government is not in the best interest of the American people. Citing polling data, he mentioned that only 22% of individuals have a favorable view of the federal government.
During a speech from the Oval Office, Trump reiterated his call to nationalize the voting process, suggesting federal intervention in elections in certain states and cities, which directly challenges the U.S. Constitution.
Referring to an ABC News/Washington Post poll, Enten pointed out that 56% of all U.S. adults believe Trump is not dedicated to ensuring free and fair elections. Among independents, this sentiment is even stronger at 65%.
Independents, according to Enten, are a demographic that Trump has been struggling to connect with. Their distrust of Trump extends to his overall performance as president and specifically to his commitment to fair elections.
Furthermore, a Pew Research Center survey revealed that a majority of Americans believe the 2024 elections in their community were well-run (69%), compared to U.S. elections overall (43%).
Enten concluded by noting that while Trump may have changed many norms, the American people do not support his stance on this particular issue.
