Amazon and Google are winning the AI capex race — but what’s the prize?

The AI industry is constantly evolving, with companies racing to invest in data centers to gain a competitive edge. Amazon, Google, Meta, Oracle, and Microsoft are all heavily investing in capital expenditures to enhance their AI capabilities. Amazon, for example, announced a projected $200 billion in capex for 2026, with a focus on AI, chips, robotics, and satellites.

Google is not far behind, projecting between $175 billion and $185 billion in capital expenditures for the same year. Meta and Oracle are also investing significantly in their AI infrastructure, with projected capex spending of $115 billion to $135 billion and $50 billion, respectively. Microsoft, although lacking an official projection for 2026, has been increasing its capex spending, reaching $37.5 billion in the most recent quarter.

While these investments are crucial for companies to stay competitive in the AI space, investors have shown some hesitation. Stock prices have dropped for companies with high capex spending, leading to pressure on CEOs to justify these expenses. Despite this investor skepticism, the potential of AI to revolutionize industries is undeniable, driving companies to continue investing heavily in high-end compute resources.

The Techcrunch event in Boston, MA on June 23, 2026, will likely be a platform for industry leaders to discuss the future of AI and the implications of these massive investments. While investor sentiment may cause some companies to downplay the cost of their AI ambitions, the overall trend towards investing in AI infrastructure remains strong.

In conclusion, the AI industry is facing a pivotal moment where companies must balance the need for substantial investments in data centers with investor expectations. The race to dominate the AI landscape is fierce, and only those with the resources and capabilities to harness the power of AI will emerge as leaders in the years to come.
