Showbiz Queenstown made history by winning the top award at the Otago Southland Theatre Awards (Ostas) for the first time. Their production of Into The Woods was recognized as the ‘best overall musical’ at the prestigious event held last weekend in Mosgiel. Marty Newell was honored with the ‘best director’ award, Natasha Wilson received ‘best vocal direction’, and the musical also won best ensemble for Ever After, best set, and best wardrobe.

Showbiz received multiple nominations in various categories including best makeup and hair, best property, best lighting, and best choreography. Ben Wombwell and Pol Nicholson were nominated for best supporting male in a musical, while Eve Corbett was up for best leading female in a musical.

Remarkable Theatre’s Take A Chance On Me, performed at Arrowtown’s Athenaeum Hall, also received six nominations with Repertory Invercargill’s Mums the Word 2 — Teenagers taking home the award for best overall play.

Marty Newell expressed his gratitude for the recognition and praised the hard work and dedication of the entire team. He highlighted the challenges faced during the production of Into The Woods, including the need to use temporary venues for rehearsals and storage of equipment in different council spaces.

Ostas chair Gwyn Stevenson commended the exceptional talent and effort displayed by theatre groups across the region over the past year. The awards ceremony was a celebration of the outstanding performances and contributions to the South’s vibrant theatre scene.
