Equinor and Eneco have recently announced a five-year contract for the supply of natural gas to the Netherlands, with deliveries set to commence on 1 February this year. This agreement allows for annual volumes of up to 500 million cubic metres to be supplied to the Dutch gas grid. The gas supplied will be produced and transported from the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS), resulting in a lower greenhouse gas footprint compared to other sources available in Europe.
In addition to gas deliveries, Eneco will also receive guarantees of origin through ‘sustainability qualities’ that are transferred via a platform operated by Attributes SAS. This partnership is expected to result in a reduction of more than 10% in Eneco’s reported carbon dioxide emissions.
Helle Østergaard Kristiansen, Equinor’s gas and power senior vice-president, expressed his satisfaction with the new agreement, emphasizing the importance of sustainability in energy provision. He highlighted that this agreement marks one of the first partnerships to utilize the Attributes SAS platform, showcasing the commitment of key European energy players to Norwegian gas as a secure and sustainable energy source.
Eneco CEO Kees Jan Rameau also expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership with Equinor, noting that natural gas remains a necessary component in the energy mix as the company works towards its One Planet goal of climate neutrality. He emphasized the importance of sourcing gas with the lowest emissions available to support their sustainability objectives.
Eneco, headquartered in Rotterdam, operates across the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and the UK, providing electricity, natural gas, and heat to over two million households and businesses. The company’s commitment to sustainability aligns with Equinor’s focus on providing environmentally friendly energy solutions.
In a related development, Equinor and its partners announced the discovery of oil, condensate, and gas at the Tyrihans Øst prospect in the Norwegian Sea. This discovery further underscores Equinor’s position as a leading energy provider in the region.
